Least Common Multiple

Main Concept The least common multiple (LCM) of two integers $a$ and $b$ is the smallest positive integer which is a multiple of both $a$ and $b$. Consider two balls bouncing in steps of length $a$ and $b$ respectively, and watch them bounce until they both land on the ground together (after starting together). The total (horizontal) distance they have traveled is the LCM of $a$ and $b$.

Change the parameters of the lowest common multiple by dragging the sliders. Click animate to watch the balls bounce until they find the LCM.
