The Electromagnetic System of Units (EMU)

Description

 • The electromagnetic system of units (EMU) has the centimeter, gram, second, and biot as its base units, where the biot is energy-equivalent to the unit square root dyne ($\frac{\sqrt{\mathrm{cm}}\sqrt{g}}{s}$). For naming consistency, the biot is called the abampere.
 • When used in conjunction with the UseSystem command, the electromagnetic system sets the following units for the given dimensions.

Dimension Name Unit Name length centimeter mass gram time second speed kyne acceleration gal force dyne energy erg power erg per second pressure barye electric current abampere electric charge abcoulomb electric capacitance abfarad magnetic inductance abhenry electric conductance absiemens electric resistance abohm magnetic flux density abtesla electric potential abvolt magnetic flux abweber plane angle radian solid angle steradian

Examples

Electromagnetic units can be converted to their energy equivalents.

 > $\mathrm{convert}\left(1,'\mathrm{units}',\mathrm{sqrt}\left('\mathrm{dyne}'\right),'\mathrm{abampere}','\mathrm{energy}'\right)$
 ${1}$ (1)
 > $\mathrm{convert}\left(1,'\mathrm{units}',\mathrm{sqrt}\left('\mathrm{cm}''g'\right),'\mathrm{abcoulomb}','\mathrm{energy}'\right)$
 ${1}$ (2)

If infolevel is set to a greater integer (possible settings are 1 through 5), more detailed information about the computation method is displayed.

 > $\mathrm{infolevel}\left[\mathrm{Units}\right]≔1:$
 > $\mathrm{convert}\left(1.28523,'\mathrm{system}','W','\mathrm{EMU}'\right)$
convert/system:   "converting to the units erg/s"
 ${1.285230000}{×}{{10}}^{{7}}$ (3)
 > $\mathrm{convert}\left(5.2324932,'\mathrm{system}','\mathrm{mho}','\mathrm{EMU}'\right)$
convert/system:   "converting to the units abS"
 ${5.232493200}{×}{{10}}^{{-9}}$ (4)
 > $\mathrm{unassign}\left('\mathrm{infolevel}\left[\mathrm{Units}\right]'\right)$
 > $\mathrm{with}\left(\mathrm{Units}\left[\mathrm{Standard}\right]\right):$
 > $\mathrm{Units}\left[\mathrm{UseSystem}\right]\left('\mathrm{EMU}'\right)$

Notes:

 – To enter a unit in 2-D Math input, select the unit from the appropriate Units palette. If the unit you want is not there, select $\mathrm{unit}$ and then enter the unit.
 – When you edit a unit, double brackets appear around it.
